Crop restructuring – an effective approach in Chi Khe.

(Baonghean.vn) - Implementing the policy of transforming the crop structure towards diversification and specialization, in recent years, people in Chi Khe commune (Con Cuong district) have boldly invested in and introduced many new crop varieties into production, bringing high economic efficiency; increasing income, gradually becoming wealthy, and actively contributing to the implementation of the local new rural development program.

Mr. Trinh Xuan Tao's household in Quyet Tien village, Chi Khe commune, owns 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of land. Previously, he planted short-term crops, which yielded little profit. After visiting and learning from experiences in many areas inside and outside the province, and researching through newspapers and television, in 2012 he boldly introduced Phuc Trach pomelo trees for cultivation. Thanks to applying the correct technical procedures, after only 3 years of planting and caring for them, his 135 pomelo trees are now beginning to yield fruit. On average, each tree produces 50-60 fruits, and with a market price of 30,000-50,000 VND per fruit, he has earned a considerable income. In addition, he also invested in planting 100 hybrid apple trees, which are now also producing fruit.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bui Dinh Thao's household in Bai Oi village, Chi Khe commune, despite having only over 1.5 hectares of hillside land for growing lemons, achieves an annual yield of over 13 tons thanks to good investment and care. With an average selling price of 8,000 VND/kg, his family earns nearly 100 million VND per year.

Mr. Thao said: "Lemon trees only need to be planted and cared for once, then they yield fruit for a long time. The care costs are not expensive, and they bear fruit after about 3 years. The older the tree, the higher the yield. Thanks to growing lemons, my family's finances have improved significantly."

This is the model of growing large apples by the people in Quyet Tien village, Chi Khe commune.

Mr. Nguyen Van Minh, head of Bai Oi village, said: "Most people in Bai Oi village are farmers. However, due to the predominantly hilly terrain and dry, rocky soil, choosing a crop that would be economically viable is a difficult problem. Faced with this situation, the Party branch, the village management board, and the villagers held a meeting and agreed to plant lemon trees on the hilly land."

To date, almost all of the 104 households in the village cultivate lemons, covering a total area of ​​30 hectares. The smallest plots are 5-6 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares), while larger plots reach 2-3 hectares. Each year, the lemon orchards in Bai Oi yield about 5-6 tons per hectare, with some older, well-cultivated orchards achieving 7-8 tons per hectare. With an average selling price of around 8,000 VND per kilogram, after deducting expenses, lemon-growing households can earn a profit of over 30 million VND per hectare.

Mr. Bui Dinh Thao's lemon farming model in Bai Oi village, Chi Khe commune, with 600 lemon trees, generates nearly 100 million VND in income annually.

Over the years, the restructuring of crop patterns in Chi Khe commune has yielded positive results. This has led to the formation of concentrated specialized production areas such as: vegetable production on a scale of 17 hectares; high-economic-value fruit orchards like Phuc Trach pomelo, large apples, and oranges concentrated in Tien Thanh and Quyet Tien villages; and lemons in Bai Oi village…

The Resolution of the XXIV Party Congress of the commune, term 2016-2021, emphasizes that in addition to continuing to effectively develop key crops, the commune is implementing a project to convert some abandoned land areas in regions such as Thung Coong to form specialized areas for industrial crops and fruit trees. This will create conditions and opportunities for farmers in the commune to develop comprehensively.
