A mother in Ohio (USA) welcomed a healthy son into the world by cesarean section, just 30 minutes after discovering she was pregnant.
"I love children and want to be a mother one day," said Ally Opfer, 23.
Opfer was admitted to the hospital after experiencing abdominal pain. Doctors initially thought she had kidney stones, but after an ultrasound, they discovered she was 38 weeks pregnant and ready to give birth. Half an hour later, Opfer gave birth to her son, Oliver, according toInsider Edition News.
"I was shocked and really didn't believe it. I didn't realize how much I needed him until I picked him up," Opfer explained.
Before Opfer became pregnant, her monthly periods were irregular. She missed her period but did not feel anything unusual. She took several pregnancy tests and received negative results.
"I was fine and had no symptoms. Everything was normal," Opfer recalled.
Opfer knew something was up when she started having period-like pains. Over the next two days, Opfer was in so much pain that she went to the hospital. Doctors ran several tests before confirming that Opfer was pregnant.
That was the surprise and happiness that Opfer experienced more than a year ago. Now, Opfer's son is one year old. His presence still surprises her and her family.
"He's my best friend. We have a really strong bond. Oliver follows me everywhere. We're always together when I'm home," Opfer said.
In an interview withFOX NewsOpfer admits to not eating healthily while pregnant, but she luckily doesn't drink or smoke.
There are no accurate statistics on the number of women who give birth without knowing they are pregnant. A recent study found that one in 7,000 women did not know they were pregnant until they gave birth.
Opfer is not the first mother to experience a surprise birth. On March 2, a British woman gave birth after experiencing abdominal pain. This mother did not know she was pregnant until she was about to give birth. She gave birth to a son while her boyfriend was calling an ambulance.BBCreport

According to Dr. Patricia Devine, director of obstetrics at Columbia University Medical Center, surprise births are extremely rare, because the signs of pregnancy are not difficult to detect. However, in some cases, the mother will not know this if she is obese. Obesity often causes irregular periods and slight weight gain. Teenage girls also often deny being pregnant. Even adult mothers, without mental and emotional preparation, are subjective about pregnancy, despite having some of the most familiar symptoms. In addition, people who are not knowledgeable about the most common signs such as late periods, missed periods, weight gain, nausea or breast tenderness will also fall into the situation of not knowing until the birth.
When you are planning to get pregnant, you should visit a trusted doctor regularly to prepare for your baby as best as possible. Opfer’s case shows that store-bought pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate.
