Seenu Kumari, 19, who was born into a poor family in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh state, spent nearly 5,000 rupees (nearly $80) to create the unique pants, according toZee News.
The pink pants have a specially designed belt that includes a lock, a GPS device, and a camera. They also cannot be cut with a knife.
"I installed a smart lock that no one can open without a password. I also installed an electronic device with GPS and call function," Kumari explained in a video on her YouTube page. "When someone tries to molest a woman, the device sends a notification to her relatives and the police. The police will arrive at the scene as directed by the GPS and prevent the rape attempt."
The camera on the pants is intended to record the faces of the perpetrators and the events of the incident. "Women don't need to wear the pants all the time. They can wear them when they are traveling alone or when they can't find a safe place. In case of an attack, they can press a button on the device to call a pre-set emergency number," Kumari added.
Sexual abuse, rape and child molestation are common in Uttar Pradesh, with women regularly attacked on the streets and pornographic material sold openly at low prices.
Kumari has submitted a prototype of the panties to the National Innovation Foundation for a patent. She hopes the product will be widely sold and used by everyone.
