Infonet reporters spoke with Mr. Ngo Van Lang, the principal of Phin Ngan Primary School in Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province, to better understand this issue. Mr. Lang stated: “An incident of a teacher hitting a student occurred on March 25th at the Trung Ho branch of Phin Ngan Primary School. Teacher Tran Thi Thu Tra (born in 1980, Cam Duong, Lao Cai) was teaching a first-grade class when she acted aggressively towards student Phan Chung Thuy (6 years old, from Phin Ngan commune, Bat Xat district), causing Thuy to suffer facial injuries and psychological trauma.”

“Immediately after the incident, the school coordinated with the child's family and provided financial support for hospitalization and treatment, while also reassuring the child. The child is now stable and will be discharged in a few days. However, the school deeply regrets allowing this act of school violence to occur at our school. After taking care of the child, we reported the matter to our superiors and immediately convened a disciplinary committee meeting, recommending that disciplinary action be taken against teacher Tran Thi Thu Tra,” Mr. Lang shared.

Upon further contact with the leadership of the Lao Cai Department of Education and Training, Ms. Duong Bich Nguyet, Deputy Director of the Department, stated: "I am busy in a meeting to direct the handling of this matter," and then hung up.

Mr. Hoang Dang Khoa, Chairman of the People's Committee of Bat Xat District (Lao Cai), said: "Immediately after the incident occurred, the school's leadership promptly informed higher authorities without concealment. Teacher Tran Thi Thu Tra was trained in her specialized field, but in this case of school violence, her professional ethics need to be reviewed."

According to Mr. Khoa, after verifying the incident, the district leaders requested the Department of Education and Training and the District Police to cooperate with the school to continue investigating and clarifying the extent of the teacher's serious misconduct in the educational environment in order to impose appropriate disciplinary measures.
