Is it advisable to buy a car that has had its engine overhauled?
A car with a disassembled engine will significantly affect its value and reliability for buyers.
Many experienced people therefore advise against buying cars that have had their engines overhauled.
Simply put, a "removed engine" means the engine has been taken apart for repair. This process typically involves disassembling and inspecting internal engine components such as pistons, cylinders, valves, camshafts, oil and water pumps, fuel injection systems, electrical systems, and other parts.
Engine overhaul or rebuilding aims to restore original performance, increase durability, and ensure stable engine operation.

However, in the case of unreliable used car dealerships, the engines of overhauled vehicles may be replaced with low-quality parts and components. This leads to frequent breakdowns, wasting the owner's time, money, and effort.
On this issue, many experts agree that "disassembling" a car significantly affects its subsequent operation. Not to mention that reassembly at a dealership cannot be as precise as at a factory.
"Reassembly can never achieve the original specifications; the tightening torque of each bolt is different, and only factories have the equipment to measure the tightening torque of each bolt. After a period of use, these bolts will loosen, affecting the vehicle's safety."Engineer Le Van Tach stated.
According to engineer Tach, dealership staff are generally not knowledgeable about engines; only mechanical engineers can diagnose and fix the problem. Furthermore, simply disassembling the engine doesn't guarantee a solution.
"Every driver should be aware of any problems with their vehicle, such as noises, excessive fuel consumption, or vibrations… there are hundreds of reasons why an engine might not function properly. Therefore, car owners need to remember these faults so they can report them to the dealership or manufacturer for the best possible solution."Engineer Le Van Tach offered advice.

In reality, each car manufacturer usually imports car parts from different countries, and the quality varies. Therefore, even within the same car brand, an engine imported from India might have a different quality than one imported from South Korea, and it also depends on the specific batch. That's why checking whether a car's engine has been disassembled is very important.
First, buyers need to inspect the bolts and nuts, checking their condition on the vehicle, such as engine mount bolts, cylinder head bolts, hood bolts, and frame bolts. These bolts should have their original paint intact, with no signs of chipping or tampering. If the bolts have changed color or show signs of being loosened and tightened, it certainly indicates that the engine has been disassembled.
Next, start the engine and listen to the sound. The engine sound should be crisp, even, without any strange noises or unusual vibrations. Observe the indicators on the dashboard such as the screen, lights, air conditioning, instrument cluster, and fault indicator lights to ensure they are functioning normally.
Finally, test drive the car. Drive it to check its performance and feel its "pulse." Check the engine's power when accelerating, the responsiveness and safety of the braking and clutch systems. Observe the exhaust fumes and check the engine temperature after the test drive.
Checking to determine if a car has had its engine overhauled is crucial. However, whether or not to buy it depends on many other factors.
In terms of benefits, even new cars with overhauled engines will lose at least 30% of their value, thus saving buyers a considerable amount of initial costs.
In terms of performance, engine overhauls will be more efficient if performed at a reputable service center and using reliable replacement parts. Conversely, using the wrong type of parts can damage the vehicle.
Regarding resale value, refurbished cars typically depreciate rapidly over time. Consider the resale value and resale potential of the model you're interested in. Additionally, refurbished cars from unofficial sources will void your warranty.
