Should you continue using a cracked phone screen protector?
A cracked phone screen protector can still be used for a while, but if it develops sharp edges, peels off, or affects touch sensitivity, you should replace it.
Screen protectors, especially tempered glass, are designed to absorb impact when a phone is bumped or dropped.
Therefore, the appearance of cracks sometimes means that the screen protector has done its job of protecting the screen underneath.
However, not all cracks can be ignored.
When should you replace a cracked screen protector?
If the crack is small and the patch is still firmly attached, with no sharp edges or loose fragments, you can continue using it temporarily.
Conversely, it should be replaced immediately if:
- Cracks are spreading or appearing in multiple locations.
- It has sharp edges that make swiping the screen uncomfortable.
- Pieces of glass are starting to chip or fall off.
- The crack exposes part of the screen.
- The touchscreen is starting to become unresponsive in some areas.
A severely damaged screen protector not only reduces its protective capabilities, but the resulting fragments can also scratch the screen over time.
How to remove a cracked screen protector
When removing a cracked screen protector, do so slowly to avoid damaging the screen underneath. First, turn off your phone, remove the case, and work in a well-lit area.
If the glass is broken in many places, wear gloves and safety glasses. You can also apply a layer of clear tape to the surface to hold the broken pieces in place.
Next, use your fingernail or a thin plastic card to gently lift one corner of the screen protector. Do not use a knife or sharp metal object, as these could scratch the screen.
Carefully peel off the protective film, then check and remove any remaining debris. Finally, wipe the screen clean with a soft microfiber cloth before applying a new screen protector.

If you frequently need to replace your tempered glass screen protector, you might consider using a soft, flexible screen protector such as TPU or hydrogel film. These films are thinner and more flexible, primarily helping to prevent scratches; some products even have the ability to self-heal minor scratches.
Combining a screen protector with a phone case that provides good protection for the edges and back is also an effective solution.
However, tempered glass is still suitable for those who frequently drop or bump their phones. Conversely, if the main goal is scratch protection and a slim, lightweight feel, TPU or hydrogel films might be a more sensible choice.
The most important thing is not to wait until the screen protector is completely broken before replacing it. Once sharp edges appear, fragments come loose, or functionality is affected, replacing the screen protector is safer and more economical than risking having to replace the entire screen.
