In his farewell address, Donald Trump's National Security Advisor, Lieutenant General Herbert McMaster, whom John Bolton will replace, sharply criticized Russia. McMaster's speech was posted on the White House website.

According to General McMaster, Moscow "uses old and new forms of aggression" to undermine the foundations of "international peace and security," including through political and economic means, as well as cyberattacks.
"For a long time, some countries have turned their backs on those threats. Russia brazenly and unreasonably denies its actions, and we have not been able to hold it accountable in full," McMaster said.
He praised the Donald Trump administration for expelling Russian diplomats, noting that the decision would help protect democratic institutions and processes in America.
"Putin is probably confident of victory in this new battlefield," General McMaster observed. "Perhaps he thinks our free nations are too weak to respond to Russian provocations. He's wrong. Russia's belligerence strengthens our resolve and confidence."
Earlier that day, President Donald Trump said he wanted to have good relations with Russia. According to him, everyone agrees with this, except for "the stupid ones."
