British newspapers reported today that Ivanka Trump, daughter of US President Donald Trump, chaired a roundtable meeting on human trafficking with members of Congress at the White House on May 17th, replacing her father.

According to the British newspaper Independent, the meeting, chaired by Ivanka, was attended by the Republican Majority Leader in the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, along with several members of Congress from both the Democratic and Republican parties.

It is understood that Mr. Trump was unable to chair this meeting because the timing coincided with his speech to graduating students at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in Connecticut.

The press interpreted the roundtable meeting chaired by Ivanka as another sign that Trump's daughter's role is rapidly growing within the US administration.

Lindsay Walters, the White House spokeswoman, said the meeting was the result of discussions in February between Trump and his daughter Ivanka with representatives from several organizations involved in human trafficking.

As an unpaid "advisor" to the US President, Ivanka has had the opportunity to sit at the same table with many world leaders and represent the United States at the W20 Women's Summit in Germany. She herself has admitted that her role – as an ordinary citizen, not a government official – in the White House is "unprecedented."
