Images of the first Soviet ballistic missile development have been released.
The Russian Space Systems Corporation (part of the state-owned Roscosmos) has just released unique photographs of the construction of the first Soviet long-range ballistic missile, the R-1, which was tested 70 years ago, the corporation's press department told reporters on Wednesday.

"The 'Russian Space Systems' corporation has just published a very valuable photo album showing the history of the design and manufacture of the first long-range ballistic missile of the Soviet Union, the R-1, which was successfully tested 70 years ago. The photos show parts of the missile control system, taken by specialists of NII-885 (now the 'Russian Space Systems' corporation) during the production and assembly process. The photos were compiled into an album in 1950. Until now, this document has not been widely known to the public," the statement said.

The R-1 is known to be similar to the German V2 rocket, which Soviet experts, including NII-885 personnel, researched after the end of the war on German territory.

The decision of the Council of Ministers of the Soviet Union on the creation of the R-1 rocket, issued on May 13, 1946, marked the beginning of the Soviet space industry, becoming the founding date of many specialized companies, including NII-885.
