The world-famous opera Carmen is being performed.

On the evening of November 8th, at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, for the first time, the city's audience had the opportunity to enjoy the classic opera Carmen, one of the most famous and frequently performed operas in the history of world music.

The program is a collaboration between the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony Orchestra and Opera House and the La Fabrique Opera Organization (France).

The opera Carmen is one of the special programs in the 2015 season of the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony Orchestra and Opera House, meticulously produced and directed by the outstanding French conductor Patrick Soullot. The main roles are played by two talented French opera singers: Sophie Leleu as Carmen and Olivier Trommenschlager as Don Jose.

In addition, there will be some of the best opera artists from the City's Symphony Orchestra and Opera House, such as Meritorious Artist Tran Hong Vy, Pham Duyen Huyen, Pham Khanh Ngoc… along with the theater's symphony orchestra and the "Korean Children Voices" children's choir.

First premiered in March 1875, the opera Carmen by French composer Georges Bizet was not well-received in France. It wasn't until its premiere in Vienna, Austria, in October 1875 that Carmen achieved resounding success, befitting its great stature. Since then, the opera has been enjoyed worldwide.

The opera Carmen is a powerful love tragedy set in 1830 Seville, Spain. Through the strong and distinctive language of music, it vividly and impressively portrays aspects of Spanish culture at the time, such as bullfighting, the underworld of smuggling, nomadic life, folklore, and the military. The music in Carmen achieves a superb effect, receiving high praise from critics. Its coherent structure, skillful use of motifs, and cautionary message contribute to its great musical legacy.

However, Georges Bizet could not have known the success of the opera Carmen when he passed away suddenly, just three months after its premiere. Later, Carmen became the inspiration for over 30 films, numerous stage adaptations, ballets, and musical suites. 2015 also marked the 140th anniversary of the great opera Carmen and the 140th anniversary of the death of composer Georges Bizet.

Following the performance on November 8th, the musical Carmen will continue its run on the evening of November 9th at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House.
