Natural disasters, storms, and floods are always harsh challenges, not only causing material destruction but also inflicting immense emotional shocks on workers, especially those from disadvantaged families. In these times of hardship, trade unions at all levels have truly become a solid support system, providing timely and practical assistance to help union members and workers get back on their feet and rebuild their lives.

Heartwarming acts of kindness after the storm.

During the devastating flash floods in western Nghe An province, Huoi Xa village in Nhon Mai commune suffered heavy losses. The pain of loss is clearly visible on the face of Ms. Ngan Thi Luong, a union member and worker at Luxshare ICT Nghe An Co., Ltd. Her family, already in difficult circumstances, has now lost everything: their house, crops, and property were swept away by the floodwaters.

With tears welling up in her eyes upon receiving timely support from the Trade Union, Ms. Luong choked back tears as she shared: “Seeing my house and everything else swept away, I thought I couldn’t get through it. The loss was too great; I didn’t know where to start again.”

Understanding Ms. Luong's situation, the local trade union promptly proposed, and the Nghe An Provincial Federation of Labor quickly decided to support her family with 50 million VND from the "Trade Union Shelter" Fund. This support is of immense significance, as Ms. Luong emotionally affirmed: "This 50 million VND is not just money, but a lifeline for my family."

This support enabled Ms. Luong and her family to immediately begin rebuilding their roof and stabilizing their lives. Along with Ms. Luong, 12 other workers from the Limited Liability Company also received assistance.LuxshareICT companies in Nghe An that suffered direct damage also received support of 2 million VND per person, drawn from the support fund of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor.

Also in that series of timely actions, Ms. Dang Thi Quyen, a single mother raising two young children and a worker at Nakano Vietnam Garment Co., Ltd., received a charitable gift from the company's labor union and the company. Typhoon No. 10 completely destroyed the roof of her small house, causing serious damage. Given Ms. Quyen's particularly difficult circumstances, the company's labor union quickly mobilized the company and all its employees to donate. The first donation of over 9 million VND was promptly sent to her to help with initial damage repairs.

This prompt support brought immense comfort to the single mother, giving her the motivation to overcome the most difficult period. Her story continues to be shared in the trade union's forums. This is a testament to the spirit of mutual support and sharing, not only among employees but also as a responsible partnership within the trade union organization.

After natural disasters, sanitation workers are the ones who have to work tirelessly day and night, leading the cleanup and reconstruction of urban spaces. They are the silent, diligent soldiers, but also the ones who endure the most hardship and fatigue. Amidst the immense workload, the "Trade Union Meal" program of the Nghe An Provincial Federation of Labor and the Nghe An Guest House has provided timely encouragement.

"

After the storm subsided, the workload was overwhelming. My colleagues and I worked from early morning until late at night, without rest or time for a proper meal. Everyone was exhausted. Receiving hot, nutritious lunches for three consecutive days from the "Trade Union Meal Program" made us feel incredibly supported."

That simple yet heartfelt meal not only helped the workers replenish their energy but also provided immense comfort, empowering them to excel in their tasks and quickly restore the city's clean and beautiful appearance.

System-wide involvement

In supporting union members and workers to overcome natural disasters and floods, the Vietnam Trade Union has clearly demonstrated its effective operating principle: Action from the grassroots, spreading throughout the community, and coordinated and strategically directed from higher levels. This synchronized and harmonious approach has created a solid social security network, providing timely support to workers.

The grassroots trade union is the first point of contact and handling of the difficulties and losses of its members. The spirit of mutual support and compassion has spread strongly within the workforce. For example, the Luxshare Nghe An grassroots trade union not only promptly proposed significant support for members like Ms. Ngan Thi Luong, but also extended its helping hand to the community. This unit directly visited and donated thousands of mooncakes to residents of Hung Nguyen Nam and Bich Hao communes – areas heavily affected by storms and floods – transforming material gifts into warm words of encouragement and sharing. Similarly, the trade unions of Cypress Shoe Co., Ltd., Woosin Vina Co., Ltd., etc., also represented their companies and staff in visiting and encouraging members with particularly difficult circumstances who suffered losses.

Beyond caring for its members, the commune/ward trade union also plays a crucial role as a bridge of solidarity between units. In the context of the storm and floods, the workers of the Nghe An Bridge and Road Construction and Management Joint Stock Company promptly mobilized to clear National Highway 16. Alongside these unsung heroes, the Thai Hoa Ward Trade Union coordinated to provide a compassionate lunch, giving strength to the workers. Furthermore, recognizing that many workers had to remain on site while their families were affected by the floods, the Standing Committee of the Thai Hoa Ward Trade Union promptly visited and donated essential supplies to affected families. This support served a dual purpose: ensuring the continuation of work while comforting those back home.

Responding to the call of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province, many commune and ward trade unions have mobilized donations to support flood victims. For example, the grassroots trade unions under the Dong Hieu commune trade union have raised nearly 200 million VND in cash to support people in western Nghe An province affected by typhoon No. 3. These acts of kindness – providing meals, essential supplies, and community donations – paint a vivid picture of mutual support and compassion.

The timely and effective support from grassroots trade unions is also a result of thorough and systematic policies from higher levels. Immediately after Typhoon No. 10 (Bualoi) in 2025 passed, the Provincial Federation of Labor demonstrated proactiveness and urgency in directing and implementing post-disaster recovery efforts. The Federation of Labor issued an official document requesting commune and ward trade unions and affiliated grassroots trade unions to quickly survey and assess the living conditions of union members and workers, as well as the damage caused by the storm and floods (including property damage, the situation of businesses ceasing production, and union members losing their jobs). At the same time, they closely coordinated with local authorities, units, and businesses to mitigate the consequences of the storm, rain, and floods; and participated in working groups of the Fatherland Front at the commune and ward levels to visit, encourage, and share with affected union members and workers.

"

“To ensure that ‘no union member is left behind,’ units are requested to urgently report and submit summary lists before October 25, 2025, to provide a basis for implementing further support measures, including long-term livelihood support.”

Through practical and coordinated activities, the Trade Union organization has once again firmly affirmed its position as a reliable support and companion for the working class and the people of the whole country in overcoming challenges and moving towards sustainable development.

Following Typhoon No. 10, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor provided emergency assistance of 500 million VND to the people and trade union members of Nghe An province to help them overcome the severe consequences of the storm and floods. This demonstrates the timely sharing spirit of the trade union organization nationwide.
