Australian Open shock: Learner Tien 'annihilates' Medvedev in straight sets.
Vietnamese-born tennis player Learner Tien caused a sensation in Melbourne by eliminating top seed Daniil Medvedev with a score of 6-4, 6-0, 6-3 to advance straight to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev once again experienced the nightmare of Learner Tien in the fourth round of the Australian Open. In contrast to last year's dramatic five-hour chase, this rematch took only 1 hour and 40 minutes for the young Vietnamese-born talent to complete what is considered the most shocking performance of the tournament this year.
Domination from the very first minutes
From the very first set, Learner Tien displayed immense confidence by securing an early break. Despite experiencing a health issue and needing medical attention, the Vietnamese-American player maintained incredible consistency. He closed out the set with a 6-4 victory after a precise forehand down the line, forcing Medvedev into a chasing position.
A historic set and the downfall of Medvedev.
The real earthquake erupted in the second set when Medvedev completely lost control. In less than 30 minutes, the former world number one made a series of unforced errors in basic situations and lost three service games. With a decisive backhand winner, Learner Tien won overwhelmingly 6-0, making Medvedev the first player in history to lose a set at a Grand Slam.
Entering the third set, Tien's momentum continued as he quickly took a 4-0 lead. Although Medvedev tried to fight back to narrow the score to 3-4, a lapse in concentration at the net cost the Russian player dearly. Tien's sharp passing shots in the ninth game sealed the match with a 6-3 victory.
