On many streets in Vinh city, a series of fashion stores selling warm clothes, shoes, and accessories are offering deep discounts of 50-80%. However, currently, not many people come to try on and buy clothes directly, and purchasing power has increased slightly.

Many forms of promotion

In the last days of the year, Nguyen Van Cu Street - one of the main fashion streets in Vinh City - has many signs of "big sale" and "floor price reduction". There are stores hanging signs with the same price of 299 - 399 thousand VND for all products, or discounts of 20 - 80% depending on the item.

Some store owners apply discounts based on the quantity of purchases, the more you buy, the higher the discount rate, such as: buying over 500 thousand VND, you can buy 1 more product for 29 thousand VND; or customers with accumulated points get a discount of 20 - 40% of the entire listed price at the store.

Ms. Nguyen Kim Lien in Truong Thi Ward (Vinh City) is a regular customer of a branded fashion store on Tran Phu Street. She said that her loyalty card has been at a 40% discount even on normal days. Now the store is promoting to stimulate demand on the occasion of Lunar New Year, products are discounted by 30%, combined with her 40% discount on her Vip card, she will get a total discount of 70% for every product she buys on this occasion.

Mr. Tran Ba Long, a men's fashion store owner on Nguyen Van Cu Street, said that about 2 months before Tet, his store increased the import of new goods and at the same time implemented discounts to increase sales of remaining items with the buy 2 get 1 free method. "Men's dress pants cost an average of 350 - 600 thousand VND/pants, now if you buy 2 pieces, you will get 1 more piece for free; 30% discount if you buy 1 piece," said Mr. Tran Ba Long.

Purchasing power increased slightly

At a famous brand clothing store near Ho Chi Minh Square, it was 9am but there were only a few customers choosing clothes. Ms. Tran Thuy Ha and two friends from Do Luong town said that she and her friend came from Do Luong to Vinh to take care of work, and now they have free time to go shopping at a few clothing stores. This store has quite nice, fashionable clothes, and is currently offering a deep 50% discount, but compared to the general market, the prices are still quite expensive.

Ms. Ha added that the listed price of a short coat is 1.7 million VND, 50% off is still more than 800 thousand VND, compared to the price at private stores, buying at the market is still much more expensive. A pair of dress pants has a listed price of 700 thousand VND, 40% off is still nearly 400 thousand VND. A 2-piece winter dress set, including a long skirt and a crop top costs 2.8 million VND, halved to 1.4 million VND, compared to her current income, she is still hesitant and decided to buy only 1 product.

At a store selling modernized ao dai for both adults and children, the store owner said that for more than 2 years now, direct sales have decreased sharply. With only 2 weeks left until Tet, sales have increased slightly and mainly through online sales channels. This year, she still maintains the store for retail customers to buy directly, and opens an additional "channel" for online sales. When customers place orders, they will order the delivery service to their home, and currently online sales have increased more than direct sales.

The owner of this store added that currently, clothing prices are fiercely competitive when online sales channels, especially on TikTok, are only half the price. For example, the adult ao dai she sells directly fluctuates around 200-300 thousand VND/set, but online there are many accounts selling for only 100-150 thousand VND/set, so traders at the market and at the store also have to change their selling methods and reduce costs to be able to maintain. Some, because they cannot keep up with the trend, have stopped selling, transferred or rented out their stores.

In traditional markets, clothes are also being heavily discounted by retailers, with prices of only a few tens of thousands of VND/item for children's clothes, old people's clothes, home wear, thermal shirts... Sweaters and down jackets are also being sold at cheap prices from 50 - 80 thousand VND/shirt. However, these items are often old designs, unfashionable...
