Former football star Van Sy Chi - "legend" of Vietnamese football passed away
(Baonghean.vn) - Former football star Van Sy Chi was the most famous striker of the Army football team and the Vietnam national team in the 1960s and 1970s.
On March 21, former football star Van Sy Chi passed away in his hometown Nghe An at the age of 80.

Mr. Van Sy Chi was born on May 15, 1939 in Hoang Mai, Nghe An. He is the father of the next generation of famous Vietnamese football players: Van Sy Ngoc, Van Sy Hung, Van Sy Son, Van Sy Thuy.
His children are all successful professional players, playing for their hometown team Song Lam Nghe An for many years. The most notable of these is Van Sy Thuy, who was at his peak when he won the A1 National Championship's top scorer title.

His eldest son, Van Sy Hung, played for the Vietnam national team for many years, was part of the golden generation (along with Hong Son, Huynh Duc, Minh Quang...) and was admired by many audiences nationwide.
In 1958, Mr. Van Sy Chi joined the army and played amateur football in Division 335. In 1959, after the army tournament, Mr. Van Sy Chi was called back to play for The Cong. In his first match wearing the number 10 shirt, Van Sy Chi scored 4/5 goals in the match between The Cong and the General Department of Post Office. From then on, the number 10 shirt was associated with the name Van Sy Chi until he left The Cong.

In the late 60s, Mr. Van Sy Chi was assigned to Military Region 3. In 1971, at the age of 37, he returned to play for Thanh Hoa. In 1991, the entire Van family moved to Nghe An. During his lifetime, former football star Van Sy Chi wore the number 10 jersey and played as a striker. He was famous for his intelligent, agile playing style and natural football talent.
Since 1996, when SLNA began to form youth training, former famous player Van Sy Chi moved to work as a trainer for SLNA Club and made many great contributions to the football movement of his home province.
Upon receiving the sad news, former football stars and fans across the country sent their condolences to Mr. Van Sy Chi's family.
