Comey made the statement during a public hearing before the US Senate Intelligence Committee regarding allegations that President Donald Trump had asked him to conceal sensitive information related to last year's presidential election.
During the three-hour hearing, Comey argued that U.S. law does not provide grounds for firing the FBI Director, so the Trump administration chose to "slander" him and the FBI by claiming the agency was in chaos, had weak leadership, and its staff had lost faith in it.
The former FBI director called these reasons a "deception" by the White House. Comey also released transcripts of his conversations with President Donald Trump, in which Trump sought a "patronage relationship" and demanded "loyalty" from him.
Comey also presented evidence that President Donald Trump asked him to stop investigating former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn.
Former FBI Director Comey suggested that his firing was somehow intended to alter the investigation into allegations of Russian interference in the US election and was a "big bargain."
On May 9th, FBI Director Comey was unexpectedly fired by President Donald Trump while he was in charge of the investigation into allegations of Russian interference in last year's US presidential election.
The U.S. Department of Justice subsequently appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special prosecutor to oversee the federal investigation into the matter.
