Two people who attempted suicide due to World Cup betting losses were saved.
Two men in Ho Chi Minh City were hospitalized on June 27th after attempting suicide by ingesting poison following losses from football betting.
Dr. Hoang Ngoc Anh, Deputy Head of the Intensive Care and Toxicology Department at Thong Nhat Hospital, said that a 33-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency room at 8 PM on June 27th in a state of rat poison poisoning. Doctors performed gastric lavage and administered activated charcoal. Due to arriving at the hospital early and receiving timely emergency treatment, the patient has recovered and is currently under observation.
The patient stated that he worked as a tricycle driver in Hoc Mon. Since the beginning of the World Cup season, he had lost approximately 300 million VND in gambling. Although he hadn't gambled for the past two days, the debt was so large that he became desperate and attempted suicide. After ingesting three packets of rat poison, he called his family to ask for help getting to the hospital.

A few hours earlier, Thong Nhat Hospital also admitted a male patient born in 1971, residing in Tan Binh district, to the emergency room in a semi-conscious state due to carbamate pesticide poisoning. The doctor had to intubate the patient to help him breathe. This morning, the patient was weaned off the intubation. The wife said her husband lost money gambling on football and was trying to commit suicide.
According to Doctor Anh, poisoning from pesticides and rat poison can occur.Complications such as kidney failure, liver failure, cardiac arrhythmias, respiratory failure, and bleeding disorders can be fatal if not treated promptly. After discharge, patients also need psychological support.
Doctors advise that to maintain good health, people watching football should choose matches with suitable times, avoiding staying up too late which affects work productivity, especially for manual laborers who are more prone to accidents. It's important to understand that watching football is a healthy form of entertainment and should not be used for gambling.
