According to AFP, the migrants who were rescued were mostly from sub-Saharan Africa.

The SOS Mediterranee rescue team said their vessel, the Aquarius, rescued 394 people, including a group of 75 Bangladeshis.

Six years after the fall of leader Moamer Kadhafi's regime, Libya remains in turmoil and has become a gateway for many migrants seeking to illegally enter Europe.

This year, the number of people attempting to cross the border by sea to Italy has increased significantly, mostly migrants coming from the western region of Libya, about 300 km from Italy.

Europe is considering measures to stop thousands of migrants who are still risking crossing borders, while warning that migrants stranded in Libya could face abuse.
