Cameron's decision could potentially trigger a by-election to contest his parliamentary seat in Oxfordshire.

Former Finance Minister George Osborne expressed regret over Cameron's decision and hinted that he would not withdraw from Parliament like the former Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Theresa May said: “I am proud to have worked in David Cameron’s government. Under his leadership, we achieved great things, not only stabilizing the economy but also making great strides in social reform. Cameron’s commitment to leading a united government is something I will continue. I thank him for all he has done for the Conservative Party and for the country.”

Cameron became Prime Minister of the UK in May 2010 and was re-elected after the Conservative Party's victory in the May 2015 general election. He decided to resign after failing to persuade British voters to remain in the European Union (EU) in the referendum on June 23rd. At the time, he stated that he still planned to remain in Parliament despite no longer holding the leadership role of the Conservative Party.

Last July, the leader of the ruling Conservative Party, Theresa May, was officially appointed by Queen Elizabeth II as the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. One of May's immediate tasks is to conduct negotiations on Britain's departure from the EU.
