Former Polish Prime Minister warns of a 'fatal blow' from Ukraine.
Former Polish Prime Minister and European Parliament member Leszek Miller is concerned about Ukraine's potential accession to the European Union due to the damage Warsaw would subsequently suffer. He stated this in an interview with Fakt.
The politician said: "Polish agriculture will suffer a very painful, even fatal, blow."
Miller called the situation on the Polish-Ukrainian border "madness." The former prime minister emphasized that helping the Ukrainians with equipment and weapons is one thing, but Polish agriculture also needs to be considered.
European parliamentarians also expressed concern about the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union. According to them, this would mean major problems for the entire European agricultural sector.
"Imagine what would happen if Kyiv joined the European Union and there was no way to control or regulate the flow of goods into it. Because no one would be able to compete with their products," Miller warned.
The politician emphasized that the popular belief that Ukrainian agriculture is similar to Polish agriculture is fundamentally wrong. The average farm size in Poland is about 11 hectares, while in Ukraine there are mainly large-scale agricultural enterprises with areas of 600, 700, and even 800,000 hectares, he noted.
"How can there be fair competition with this? That's simply unrealistic!" the politician exclaimed angrily.
Miller concluded that if Kyiv wants to become part of the European Union, it must come to terms with the fact that there will be no concessions or benefits.
Farmers' protests have taken place in many European countries in recent weeks. The main reasons are the European Commission's desire to implement green policies and the influx of agricultural products from Ukraine into the European market.
