Former German Chancellor calls for talks with Russia on Ukraine
Former German Chancellor Schroeder said that those who believe that Russia can be defeated should remember history.

According to RIA Novosti on September 22, former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder called for negotiations with Russia on the conflict in Ukraine, and advised those who believe they can achieve a military victory over Russia to “look into history”. “I advise all those who believe in victory over Russia to look into history, from Napoleon to Hitler, who all failed in their pursuit of that goal,” Welt newspaper quoted former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder as saying.
Mr. Gerhard Schroder also clarified that the most realistic scenario for achieving peace in the Ukraine conflict is to hold negotiations and reach a compromise with Russia.
“This war will have to end through negotiations,” Mr. Schroder said. “In any case, this problem cannot be solved by military means. We will need to reach compromises.”
According to the former German Chancellor, the West is ignoring Russia's legitimate security interests and underestimating the possibility of escalating the conflict in Ukraine.
“Germany needs to act particularly carefully and constructively given the history of the Second World War and the crimes committed in the name of Germany,” Mr Schroder warned.
In September 2024, President Vladimir Putin said that Russia does not refuse to negotiate with Ukraine, but future negotiations must be held on the basis of the agreements tentatively recorded in Istanbul, Türkiye in 2022.
