Former German Chancellor Merkel calls for dialogue with Russia.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel believes that there will be no purely military solution, and that dialogue with Russia is necessary.
According to TASS on November 24, in an interview with The Times (UK), former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Ukraine and its Western allies need to begin dialogue with Russia to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.
“Defending Ukraine’s independence is our duty, and on this issue, I support what the current government and the European Union are doing. However, I am certain that, from now on, those responsible must determine the appropriate time. We will need dialogue. There will be no purely military solution,” former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, while expressing hope that the world would not face a major conflict.
Speaking about how politicians today should build relationships with US President-elect Donald Trump, Merkel suggested they should simply “maintain sincerity” and consistency in their communication with the future American leader and “listen to his arguments.”
According to the former German Chancellor, Trump was previously correct in saying that European countries spend too little on defense needs.
"Furthermore, stand your ground. Don't be too friendly or too tough – just be yourself. Try to make the best of the situation. And most importantly, don't be afraid," Angela added.
