According to TASS news agency on November 24, in an interview with The Times (UK), former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said that Ukraine and its Western allies need to start a dialogue with Russia to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

“It is our duty to protect Ukraine’s independence and in this regard I support what the current government and the European Union are doing. However, I am sure that those responsible must decide the right moment soon. We will need to talk. There will be no purely military solution,” said former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, expressing hope that the world is not on the brink of a major conflict.

Speaking about how politicians today should build relationships with US President-elect Donald Trump, Ms. Merkel said that they should only “maintain sincerity” and consistency in communicating with the future US leader and “listen to his arguments.”

According to the former German Chancellor, Mr. Trump was previously correct in saying that European countries spend too little on defense needs.

“Also, stay grounded. Don’t be too friendly or too tough – be yourself. Try to make the best of the situation. And most importantly, don’t be afraid,” Angela added.
