(Baonghean.vn) - The former Russian president said that although Moscow was not happy to lose Brussels as a strategic partner, it had to accept this new reality.

According to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Russia and the European Union (EU) are now “real enemies” rather than neighbors.

Writing on social media a few days ago, Mr. Medvedev, who currently serves as Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, declared that Brussels was obsessed with building “crazy conspiracy theories” and speaking uncontrollably about “the complete unpredictability of Russia.”

As a result, the bloc spent “huge sums of money to maintain its security” but “lost Russia as a long-term strategic partner. We are not happy about this, but it is the truth,” the former president added.

Mr Medvedev accused the EU of meekly submitting to the whims of the US, meaning the bloc had lost the ability to act independently not only globally but even in Europe.

“Almost all EU countries stood firm in front of the United States and Great Britain and began to obediently carry out their instructions to support the regime in Kiev. And now generally any instructions,” Mr. Medvedev wrote.

He said the EU had brought itself to the brink of "complete degeneration" by deciding to become an enemy of Russia at the instigation of Washington.

At the same time, the former Russian president asserted that the world's powers will sooner or later agree on how to coexist in the new geopolitical conditions, and that Washington will have no choice but to come to terms with Russia, China and the countries of the Southern Hemisphere.

One of Russia’s closest allies, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, declared last week during a meeting with Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto that he wholeheartedly supports the existence and preservation of the EU, and wants it to become “strong, resilient, sovereign and independent.”

Lukashenko explained that his support did not stem from any special love for the EU but because it was one of the pillars, along with Russia, China, the US and India, holding up the planet and its collapse would be “bad for everyone”.
