(Baonghean.vn)-Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned that a full-scale war between Russia and NATO would leave Moscow with no choice but to deploy nuclear weapons. However, he reiterated that his country does not seek conflict with the US-led military bloc.

Writing on Telegram on February 7, Mr. Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of the Russian Federation Security Council, rejected statements by many Western leaders calling on their countries to prepare for a potential conflict with Moscow.

He noted that Russia has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to stage a conflict with NATO and the EU, although the EU and NATO continue to “speak dangerous nonsense” on this issue.

Mr Medvedev suggested the story was designed to divert Western voters' attention from the huge spending on aid to Ukraine - an effort he said many were tired of.

“Therefore, every day the leaders of these countries send out the message: We need to prepare for war with Russia and continue to help Ukraine,” Mr. Medvedev shared.

However, Mr Medvedev warned that a potential Russia-NATO war would be different from the conflict in Ukraine and would not rely on the use of artillery, tanks and drones. He noted that the military alliance has a combined population of nearly a billion people and defense spending of $1.5 trillion, making it far more powerful than Russia.

"Since our military capabilities are incomparable, we simply have no other choice. The response will be asymmetrical. To protect the territorial integrity of our country, ballistic and cruise missiles with special warheads will be used... This will be the Doomsday as everyone knows it. The end of everything," Medvedev argued.

In that context, he called on Western politicians to tell their voters “the bitter truth” about what would happen in the event of war with Russia.
Russian officials have repeatedly stated that Moscow has never threatened to use nuclear weapons, but have noted that they could be deployed if the state's existence is threatened.

In December 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin also said that Moscow “has no interest… geopolitically, economically or militarily… in waging war against NATO.” However, Moscow argues that the bloc’s expansion toward Russia’s borders poses an existential threat./.
