According to RIA Novosti on March 26, US President's special envoy for special missions Richard Grenell said that the nuclear weapons that Ukraine transferred to Moscow under the Budapest Memorandum do not belong to this country, and that they are Russian property. On the social network X, Mr. Grenell described this as an "unpleasant truth".

“Let’s be clear about the Budapest Memorandum: the nuclear weapons belong to Russia and are a relic. Ukraine has returned the nuclear weapons to Russia. They do not belong to Ukraine. This is an inconvenient truth,” Mr. Grenell wrote.

In February, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Ukraine lost the opportunity to acquire nuclear weapons in 1994, when the Budapest Memorandum was signed, and if Kiev now decides to create nuclear weapons, it will lose partners and arms supplies.

Earlier, in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the process of Ukraine joining NATO could take years, decades and the West should provide nuclear weapons to Kiev to ensure security.
