"Specialty" of Tuong Duong local pigs

(Baonghean.vn) - With tens of thousands of pigs being raised on farms and households, Tuong Duong district is considered the locality that raises the most native pigs in the whole province. This is an important source of clean meat supply for the mountainous market during the Binh Than New Year (2016).

The local pork of the highlanders of Tuong Duong district is often called local pig, young pig, black pig… In the current trend towards “clean” products, local pork is also considered a safe product. Local pig breeds often have better meat quality than the economic crossbred pork imported from the lowlands.

Ms. Le Thi Lien, a pig farmer in Hoa Trung block, Hoa Binh town, said: The quality of local pork is delicious because the pigs are raised naturally in home gardens or production areas on the fields, raised entirely on natural food including banana trees, vegetables, rice bran, etc.

Mr. Le Van Vinh, resident of Hoa Trung block, Hoa Binh town, said: The reason why native black pigs are not raised with industrial feed is because the largest weight of a native pig is only about 20 - 25 kg after a year of raising. If raised with industrial feed, there will definitely be a heavy loss. One reason why native pigs are delicious is because their origin is a breed of pig with shaggy hair, short snout but firm meat.

According to statistics from the Tuong Duong Agriculture Department, the total pig herd of the district is more than 29 thousand, most of which are native pigs.
