Specialty of jujube leaves on salt fields in Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - The water mimosa plant growing in salt fields has become a favorite dish for urban residents. Farmers in Quynh Luu (Nghe An) are "hunting" for this vegetable to sell to traders.

We followed Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thuy, in Hamlet 10, Quynh Ngoc Commune, to the salt fields in Quynh Minh Commune to pick water mimosa. As someone with more than 10 years of experience in the profession, Mrs. Thuy knows better than anyone when water mimosa will grow in abundance.

Water mimosa usually grows in salt fields. Harvesting water mimosa helps farmers in Quynh Luu earn extra income during their off-season.

Ms. Thuy said that every morning at 4am, she goes to some salt fields in the district to pick water mimosa, some days she picks about 10kg of vegetables. In one morning, she earns 80-100 thousand VND.

“Lotus vine is usually harvested year-round, but picking it from January to May will be more delicious because the weather is cool so the vine grows abundantly,” Ms. Thuy shared.

Every morning at 4am, Ho Thi Huong from An Hoa follows adults to pick water mimosa in the salt fields. Every day she picks about 4-6kg of vegetables, earning 50,000 VND.

Previously, the job of picking jute leaves in Quynh Luu only had about 10-15 people, but in recent years, when jute leaves became a favorite dish of the people, the number of people picking jute leaves increased to 30-40 people.

Ho Thi Huong, an 8th grade student at An Hoa Secondary School, has been picking jute for 3 summers. Due to her family’s difficult circumstances, every summer break, Huong follows the ladies and aunts in the neighborhood to pick jute.

Going to all the salt fields in the district from An Hoa to Quynh Tho, Quynh Thuan then Quynh Minh, Quynh Nghia, every morning from 4am to 9am, Huong also picked about 4 to 6 kg of vegetables. On average, 1 kg of water mimosa is sold for 10,000 VND.

The weather is cool and rainy, so the water spinach grows a lot.

The people of Quynh Luu often buy jute leaves to make salad, combined with peanuts, sugar, chili, lemon leaves, bean sprouts, carrots... Jute leaves salad served with rice paper and vermicelli has created the brand of Quynh Luu cuisine and is known by many people inside and outside the district.

Ms. Pham Thi My (55 years old) is a person who specializes in buying jute leaves in Quynh Tho commune. She said: Every day she buys about 50 - 70 kg of jute leaves from people, then sends them by car to Hanoi and Vinh city to sell to customers.
