China's ambassador to the US calls on the US to 'open a new path'.
Chinese Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai stated that post-pandemic global stability requires a healthy and stable China-U.S. relationship. He urged the U.S. to make the right choice.
Speaking at the online annual meeting of the Center for China-America Studies on December 3, Ambassador Cui Tiankai affirmed that 2020 was a very unusual year and could become a "historic turning point." The pandemic is intensifying and accelerating some existing fundamental trends in the world, while making some major challenges more prominent.

Therefore, he believes that "now is the time to seriously reflect on this extremely important bilateral relationship." Both sides need to "form a shared vision for the future" and "make the right decisions."
He reaffirmed China's choice, stating that cooperation is the only right option between the two sides. He also outlined areas for potential cooperation, such as enhancing public health security, addressing climate change, promoting a more inclusive and equitable globalization process, and advancing science and technology, highlighting the unprecedented need for bilateral and global cooperation. According to him, international cooperation needs to be expanded, and China and the United States should work together, rather than separating.
The Chinese ambassador to the United States also emphasized that differences have always existed between Beijing and Washington, but any differences should not be the reason for "confrontation and war," whether a cold war or a hot war. He asserted that only mutual respect and understanding can control disagreements and help maintain Sino-US relations on the right track. He argued that the zero-sum game is outdated. He urged Washington to abandon outdated thinking and suggested that the best way to avoid falling into traps is to "open a new path."
Cui Tiankai's remarks come as US President-elect John Biden is about to take office and US-China relations continue to escalate following a series of new restrictions, embargoes, and sanctions recently imposed by Washington on Chinese Communist Party members, researchers, students, and businesses.
