On April 4th, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court, in its first-instance trial, sentenced Doan Van Chien (born in 1993) to 16 years in prison for murder.
As in the previous trial, Chien admitted his guilt and hoped for leniency from the law. The prosecution proposed a sentence of 16 to 18 years in prison for Chien, and the court considered this sentence.
The trial, which opened a month ago, had to be postponed because the civil aspect, specifically the birth certificate of the victim's child, was unclear... Previously, Chiến's father had also compensated the victim's family with 150 million VND.

According to the records, on the afternoon of April 27, 2017, Chien and Pham Minh Phuong, along with several other workers, were drinking alcohol in the courtyard of the Green Energy Plant (Tan Thoi Hiep Industrial Park, Hiep Thanh Ward, District 12).
That evening, Chien and Phuong argued because Chien felt Phuong hadn't attended the funeral of a colleague's father. Annoyed by Chien's accusation, Phuong cursed and challenged Chien to a fight, but others intervened. Afterwards, Chien ran home, grabbed a knife, and returned to the drinking spot to find Phuong.
While the two were arguing loudly, Chien grabbed a knife and stabbed Phuong, causing him to collapse on the spot. People quickly took the victim to the hospital, but he died later.
After committing the crime, Chien left the scene and discarded the murder weapon. The next day, upon hearing that his colleague had died, Chien surrendered to the police.
