That was the statement of Ivan Melnikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma and delegate from the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.

"In terms of his contributions to the development of humanity, throughout history, and in terms of his socialist worldview, Fidel has always deserved to stand alongside outstanding figures such as Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Jose Marti, and Che Guevara. His legacy will continue to be studied and inspire future generations. For me personally, today's sad news is the passing of an idol in the best sense of the word," Melnikov told reporters.

Mr. Melnikov said that he had the opportunity to meet Fidel Castro many times and always saw him as a role model and example in politics.

“He was an icon of the 20th century, an icon of ideological loyalty, an icon of unwavering spirit and fighting spirit that brought success. Despite many years in power, he never for a moment lost touch with his people. Regardless of age, until his last days he retained the depth and sharpness of his thinking. He lived a legendary and great life. Fidel loved his country and his people. I am convinced that his memory should be immortalized in Russia,” Melnikov affirmed.
