Phan Boi Chau Memorial Site is located in Truong An Ward, Hue City. As one of the leaders of the revolutionary movement in the early 20th century, in June 1925, Phan Boi Chau was arrested by the French colonialists in Shanghai (China) and sentenced to life imprisonment, but under pressure from the struggle for amnesty, the French colonialists had to bring him back to Hue for house arrest. With love and respect for Phan, the people of the whole country and Thua Thien Hue voluntarily donated to buy a garden on Ben Ngu slope and build a house for him. This is where he lived the last years of his life (1926-1940) and is also his resting place. |
Although under strict control of the French colonialists, the French colonialists and their henchmen still could not subdue the patriotism and revolutionary will of Phan Boi Chau. This was also the place where elite intellectual youths with progressive consciousness and revolutionary enlightenment gathered, many of whom later became the core of the Party such as Nguyen Chi Dieu, Phan Dang Luu, Hai Trieu, Vo Nguyen Giap... |
The image of "Old Man Ben Ngu" in the last 15 years of his life has been deeply imprinted in the feelings and hearts of the people of Hue and the whole country, a shining spirit of patriotism and strong revolutionary will for today's and future generations to forever learn and follow. |
His thatched cottage was restored in 1997 and is renovated every year. |
In the relic site, there is also a stele commemorating the Vietnam - Japan exchange relationship from the Dong Du movement initiated by Phan Boi Chau in the early 20th century, presented by kind-hearted Japanese people on the 70th anniversary of the death of patriot Phan Boi Chau. |
Mr. Phan Thieu Cat (third from left) is the grandson of Mr. Phan Boi Chau, currently living in Canada, and often goes back to visit this memorial site, because this is also the place of worship of his family. Mr. Thieu Cat shared that his family always preserves the old house, especially the well and the old garden as when Mr. Chau lived. What is special is that in years of severe drought, this well provides enough water for the people in the area. |
Visiting the Phan Boi Chau Memorial Site in Hue, it is easy to feel a peaceful and cozy atmosphere because the house and his relics are always taken care of and preserved like treasures by Mrs. Phan Thi Hanh Chau - his granddaughter-in-law. |
Mr. Phan Thieu Cat and Mrs. Phan Thi Hanh Chau also said that the family is planning to renovate and embellish the garden, such as building a small library and creating some landscapes for the Relic Site so that it can truly be a destination for those who love Mr. Phan. On October 29, the couple will return to Nghe An to attend the inauguration ceremony of the memorial house at the Phan Boi Chau Relic Site in Nam Dan and the 76th anniversary of his death. |
