Viltrox AF 85mm F2.0 EVO Review: The Lightest Portrait Lens for Sony E-Class

Viltrox has officially launched its new EVO lens line, with the first product being the AF 85mm F2.0 EVO FE for Sony E-mount cameras. According to the manufacturer, the EVO line is positioned between the Air and LAB lines, combining high optical performance and flexible physical control in a compact body.

Optimized design for hybrid and ultra-lightweight construction.

The biggest highlight of the Viltrox AF 85mm F2.0 EVO is its weight of only 340g, making it Viltrox's lightest 85mm full-frame lens to date. Compared to the AF 85mm F1.4 Pro FE version, which weighs 800g, the EVO version offers significant flexibility for users who frequently travel or use it with smaller camera bodies like the Sony FX3.

Inheriting features from the high-end LAB series, the EVO series is equipped with an aperture ring that supports de-click functionality (switching between rotary and smooth rotation), making aperture changes during filming smooth and silent.

Impressive sharpness and optical construction.

The lens construction consists of 10 lenses divided into 8 groups, including 2 ED (extra-low dispersion) lenses and 2 HR (high refractive index) lenses. Viltrox claims the lens achieves sharpness from center to edge even at its maximum aperture of F2.0.

The focusing system utilizes an STM stepping motor, promising fast, quiet, and accurate autofocus for both still photography and video. The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 74cm, using a 58mm filter size.

Durability and expandability

Despite its affordable price, the Viltrox AF 85mm F2.0 EVO still features a rubber-coated lens mount that provides resistance to dust and light rain. The front lens element is coated with a Nano layer for water and dirt repellency.

The lens barrel incorporates customizable function buttons, an AF/MF toggle switch, and a USB-C port for firmware updates. Users can also easily customize the lens's functions using the Viltrox App.

Real-world performance and cost comparison

In real-world testing, the lens delivered very good sharpness at F2.0 and improved slightly at stopped-down apertures. However, flare was still present, and contrast could be slightly reduced when shooting against strong backlight. Focus breathing was present but was controlled at an acceptable level for its price segment.

At $275, the Viltrox AF 85mm F2.0 EVO is one of the most affordable 85mm portrait lenses for the Sony E system, while still maintaining good image quality and build quality.

This is a worthwhile option for users who need a lightweight, sharp prime lens for portrait photography or videography without requiring a very large aperture like f/1.4.
