Authorities busted a football betting ring worth up to 800 billion VND.
The police have just dismantled a gambling ring and organized football betting operation worth up to 800 billion VND. Nguyen Van Nam, Nguyen Van Phong, and many other suspects have been arrested.
On February 10th, the Hanoi City Police announced that they had successfully dismantled a gambling ring and organized gambling operation.football bettingwith the amount reaching 800 billion VND. The police have initiated a criminal case, charged and detained 6 individuals for the offenses of "Organizing gambling" and "Gambling".
This ring was led by Nguyen Van Phong (born in 1983, residing in Dong Anh district, Hanoi) and Nguyen Van Nam (born in 1990, residing in Bac Ninh city, Bac Ninh province). The masterminds all have numerous previous convictions and criminal records, and their criminal activities were sophisticated, with clearly defined roles. They used the internet, social media applications such as Telegram and Zalo, and bank accounts not registered in their names to conduct transactions, in order to evade law enforcement.
On January 19th, the Criminal Police Department launched a coordinated operation, arresting eight individuals, including Nam and Phong. The investigation revealed that since June 2024, Nam and Nguyen Huu Quynh (born in 1985, residing in Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province) had been organizing gambling activities together. Nam was provided with two large-limit online football betting accounts by Nguyen Tien Dung (born in 1986, residing in Bac Ninh city). Nam then handed these accounts over to Quynh for monitoring and payment processing.
From June 2024 to January 19, 2025, the total amount of money wagered by the participants reached approximately 800 billion VND. Afterward, Nam handed over the betting accounts to Phong and Hoang Anh Quang (born in 1985, residing in Dan Phuong district, Hanoi) to continue organizing the gambling operation.
By January 2025, knowing that the police were intensifying their crackdown on crime, Nam and Phong switched to using new accounts to conceal their criminal activities. Additionally, the police discovered that Tran Minh Hoang (born in 1986) was given a football betting account by Duong Van Dai (born in 1975, residing in Long Bien district, Hanoi). Hoang used this account to place bets and then handed it over to Doan Hoai Nam (born in 1991) to manage and enter betting odds for Nguyen Trung Hieu (born in 1986).
During a search of the suspects' residences, police seized 3 cars, 18 mobile phones, and froze 500 million VND in related bank accounts. The case is currently under further investigation by the police.
