Excavating house foundations, authorities discovered a jar containing 36 kg of ancient coins in Nghe An province.

On May 1st, Lang Van Trung (35 years old) from Cam Hoa village, Cam Son commune, Anh Son district, said that his family had just unearthed a jar of ancient coins while laying the foundation for their house.

Earlier, while his family was using an excavator to dig in an old garden, they unexpectedly discovered a ceramic jar. “While the excavator was digging at a depth of about 1.2 meters, it hit something strange. We thought it was a rock, but when we got closer, we saw a jar with a lid, covered in mud. Many people around were curious and rushed to see it,” Mr. Trung said.

The earthenware jar that Trung's family recently discovered has a beautiful shape, is about 45 cm tall, and has a diameter of about 30 cm at its widest point. "After opening the lid and scraping away the thin layer of soil on top, I found that underneath were coins that I suspect are some kind of ancient currency," Trung affirmed.

The jar and the ancient coins were carefully cleaned and polished by Mr. Trung's family. Upon observation, a considerable number of coins (round with square holes) were found, but they were rusted, making the Chinese characters on the coins difficult to read. The total weight of the jar of coins was 36 kg.

Mr. Lang Van Tham, the village head of Cam Hoa hamlet, confirmed that the discovery of an ancient jar of coins by Mr. Lang Van Trung, a resident of the hamlet, is true. The garden where the jar of coins was found is ancestral land where Mr. Trung's family has lived for generations. Mr. Tham also added that a similar jar of ancient coins was discovered last year while constructing the hamlet's sports field.
