Request for compensation for fishermen in Nghe An after marine environmental incident.
(Baonghean.vn) - Stating that not only the four provinces of Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, and Thua Thien Hue were affected, but also that fishermen and the marine tourism service industry in Nghe An suffered significant losses without receiving compensation, National Assembly representative Nguyen Huu Cau proposed that the Government develop a plan to support the people of Nghe An who suffered losses.
Speaking at the National Assembly's socio-economic discussion session on the morning of November 2nd, National Assembly representative Nguyen Huu Cau (Nghe An) stated that the environmental pollution in the central coastal region caused by Formosa Company has severely damaged fishermen and the marine tourism industry in Nghe An, but they have not yet received compensation. Therefore, Representative Cau proposed that the Government develop a plan to support the affected people of Nghe An.

Discussing this issue, delegate Tran Cong Thuat (Quang Binh) also commented, "Formosa's actions have seriously damaged the marine life in Central Vietnam. The lives, security, and order of the people have been severely affected. This is a violation of criminal law, but it is currently being considered for administrative penalties and economic compensation..."
Mr. Thuat expressed concern that the responsibility of state management in this matter has not yet been thoroughly addressed. "Up to now, no one has taken responsibility for the illegal discharge of wastewater by this company, nor has anyone been identified as being responsible in terms of state management," the representative from Quang Binh stated.

While appreciating the government's efforts in calculating and compensating over 7,000 affected individuals, Mr. Thuat still suggested expanding the scope of compensation to include affected businesses, because "this incident has devastated and crippled the tourism industry."
"The people also need to be considered and compensated more fairly, to minimize losses," the representative from Quang Binh stated. According to Mr. Thuat, simply thinking about compensation plus a few remedial measures is not thorough enough. "An entire economy is depleted and destroyed; it cannot be restored overnight," he emphasized.
On the other hand, Mr. Thuat also expressed strong opposition to those who deliberately exploited the Formosa incident to further complicate the situation, cause unrest, and affect security and public order.
