England returned to Wembley for the first time since manager Southgate replaced Sam Allardyce. Against a much weaker opponent in Lithuania, his players did not let Southgate down, securing a comfortable victory.

Jermain Defoe became the most notable name in England's starting lineup as the 34-year-old striker was recalled after a brilliant performance at Sunderland. Defoe has scored 14 Premier League goals this season and quickly proved his threat with the opening goal. The veteran striker finished from close range after a cross from Sterling on the right wing, marking his first goal for the national team since 2013.

In the second half, Jamie Vardy, who replaced Defoe as center forward, scored the goal that sealed the 2-0 victory. The Leicester striker coolly finished with his first touch after coming on as a substitute. This was Vardy's fifth goal in his last seven games for Leicester and England.

The victory against Lithuania helped England maintain their lead in Group F of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in the European region. Coach Southgate's team has 13 points after five matches, four points ahead of second-placed Slovakia.

After an impressive performance in the friendly against Germany, England played a more ordinary game upon returning to Wembley. They allowed Lithuania to create several chances due to defensive lapses, but were fortunate not to concede. England remains the only team to keep a clean sheet in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Defoe's goal was a highlight that helped England regain their composure. The former Tottenham striker appeared fit and eager to score in his first match after more than three years away from the national team. If Defoe had capitalized better, he could have scored a brace, but that doesn't hide the fact that the 34-year-old striker's goal-scoring instinct remains. Defoe also became the 22nd player to reach 20 goals for England.

Defoe's arrival gives manager Southgate more options after Harry Kane's absence. England's finishing remains a major headache; while they create numerous chances, they lack the composure and sharpness in the final touches.
