Goals: Defoe 21', Vardy 66'

England returned to Wembley for the first time since Southgate replaced Sam Allardyce. Against a much weaker opponent, Lithuania, the players did not let Southgate down by winning easily.

Jermain Defoe is the most notable name in the England line-up, with the 34-year-old recalled after a brilliant performance for Sunderland. Defoe has scored 14 Premier League goals this season and quickly showed his threat with the opener. The veteran striker finished close to goal after Sterling's cross from the right, marking his first international goal since 2013.

In the second half, Jamie Vardy, who replaced Defoe as a striker, scored the goal that sealed the 2-0 score. The Leicester striker coolly finished with his first touch after coming on. This was Vardy's fifth goal in the last seven matches for Leicester and England.

The victory over Lithuania helped England continue to lead Group F of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers in Europe. Coach Southgate's team has 13 points after five rounds, four points more than the second-placed team Slovakia.

After an impressive performance in the friendly against Germany, England were back to their usual self at Wembley. They allowed Lithuania to create a few chances from defensive sloppiness but were fortunate not to concede. England remain the only team to keep a clean sheet in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

Defoe's goal was the highlight that helped England become calmer. The former Tottenham striker appeared energetic and eager to score in his first match after more than three years away from the national team. Defoe had used his skills well and could have scored twice in this match, but that did not hide the 34-year-old striker's still-present scoring instinct. Defoe also became the 22nd player to reach 20 goals for England.

Defoe's presence gives Southgate more options after Harry Kane's retirement. England's finishing problem remains a headache as they can create many chances but lack the coolness and sharpness in the final stages.
