Wear headphones properly to avoid damaging your ears
Wearing headphones at high volume often damages the eardrum, causes hearing loss and gradually leads to deafness.
According to statistics from the World Health Organization, globally, more than 1 billion people aged 12-35 are at risk of hearing loss due to listening to loud music on mobile devices and frequent exposure to entertainment events with loud sound intensity. In Vietnam, the number of young people going to the doctor for hearing-related diseases has increased in recent years.
Dr. Cao Minh Thanh, Head of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at Hanoi Medical University Hospital, said one of the reasons young people have hearing loss is the result of wearing headphones.
Using headphones frequently and at high volume will cause the eardrum to vibrate continuously, causing microscopic damage, reducing the elasticity of the eardrum, changing the common fibrous fold structure in the middle of the eardrum, later manifesting as hearing loss, and the eardrum will have scars. In many cases, medical intervention is not possible, except for the use of hearing aids.
Doctor Thanh said that if symptoms appear such as having to concentrate when talking to others to hear, or having to turn on the TV louder than usual, then you should go to a hospital to have your ears examined.
How to use the headset:
-Adjust the sound: Turn the volume to a moderate level. Limit the use of headphones at maximum volume. Follow the 60-60 rule: do not listen to music or watch movies at a volume exceeding 60%. Headphone use should not be continuous for more than 60 minutes. When the volume is high, the duration should be shortened.
-Ask the person next to you: If the person next to you can hear the sound coming from your headphones, you should adjust the volume until they can no longer hear anything. This is not only a way to protect your ears, but also a way to maintain common courtesy when in public places.
-Be careful listening to headphones while driving: When you wear headphones while driving on the road, you often turn up the volume very loud to be able to hear because the sound of traffic is quite loud, so your eardrums will be tortured. Besides, wearing headphones while driving makes you unable to hear what is around you, so it is very dangerous and can easily cause accidents.
-Choose the right headphones: You should choose to buy wide-rimmed headphones that cover the ears and have good noise filtering. You should not use headphones that are in the ear canal.
-Pay attention to cleaning your headphones: Clean your headphones regularly to avoid dust and foreign objects from getting into your ears, as well as to prevent the possibility of ear infections.
-Be careful with drinking and listening to headphones: Alcohol in wine dulls low frequencies around 1000 Hz, the most important threshold for distinguishing speech. This affects our hearing.
