What is the fine for riding a motorbike on the sidewalk in 2026?

PL. April 9, 2026 19:46

I've seen many motorcyclists riding onto the sidewalk to avoid traffic jams. I'd like to ask if this behavior is punishable by law? If so, what is the fine and will it result in points being deducted from my driver's license? (Ms. Tran Thi T., Dien Chau commune, Nghe An province)

Reply:According to Clause 7, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, the act of driving a motorbike on the sidewalk (except when crossing the sidewalk to enter a house or office) will be subject to the following penalties:

7. A fine of VND 4,000,000 to VND 6,000,000 shall be imposed on the driver who commits one of the following violations:
a) ...driving a vehicle on the sidewalk, except when driving across the sidewalk to enter a house or office; ..."

Therefore, motorcyclists who ride on the sidewalk will be fined from 4,000,000 VND to 6,000,000 VND.

In addition, according to Clause 13, Article 7 of Decree 168/2024/ND-CP, violators will also have points deducted from their driver's license:

13. …
a) Committing the act specified in … point a, clause 7 of this Article will result in a deduction of 2 points from the driver's license; …”

Therefore, riding a motorbike on the sidewalk will result in a deduction of 2 points from your driver's license.

It should be noted that the law only permits motorcyclists to use the sidewalk to enter their homes or offices; using the sidewalk for traffic to avoid congestion is still subject to penalties as prescribed by law.
