Diego Simeone stays at Atletico until 2020

The Argentine coach extended his contract for another two years with the Madrid team.

Atletico announced good news on the club's homepage, when they succeeded in keeping Diego Simeone.

The 47-year-old was widely expected to leave at the end of last season, after losing to Real Madrid in the Champions League final for the second time in three years. But Simeone agreed to stay until the end of 2018, and recently extended his contract by two years, until June 2020.

Simeone's commitment to stay could be seen as a victory for Atletico Madrid.

According to AS (Spain), Simeone initially only agreed to stay until 2019.

Among the coaches working in La Liga, Simeone has been with the same club for the longest time. He was appointed coach of Atletico in 2011.

The coach nicknamed "El Cholo" helped Atletico win La Liga in 2014, Europa League in 2012 and Copa del Rey in 2013.

Atletico have been a force in the Champions League over the past five seasons, reaching the semi-finals several times and the final twice (2014 and 2016). But both times Simeone's side finished runners-up, watching rivals Real Madrid win the title.
