Many universities share the same opinion: the 2017 admission scores will tend to increase sharply compared to the previous year.

University admissions 2017: Cut-off scores will be higher.

On the morning of July 26th, as planned, the Ministry of Education and Training provided the registration data of candidates to universities to begin the admissions process. That afternoon, universities made their first assessments of the 2017 admissions cutoff score trends.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bui Duc Trieu, Head of Training DepartmentNational Economics UniversityBased on assessments, the cut-off scores for top-tier universities this year will rise quite significantly.

For the National Economics University, the cutoff scores will generally increase, reaching levels similar to those of 2015. Compared to 2016, the cutoff scores may increase by 1.5 - 2.5 points.

The increase in admission scores will occur across all majors, from high-ranking to low-ranking ones, with majors that had low admission scores last year tending to see a sharper increase than top-ranking majors.

"Those who fail to get into top-tier, popular majors will fall into the lower-ranked majors of last year, therefore the admission scores for these majors will rise sharply," Mr. Trieu analyzed.

In 2016, the admission cutoff scores for the National Economics University were divided into three groups: the lower group included majors with cutoff scores of 21-22 points, the middle group included majors with cutoff scores of 22-23 points, and the top group included majors with cutoff scores of 24-25.5 points.

Mr. Trieu predicted that top-performing industries could see a 1-point increase to 26.5 points this year, while lower-ranked or mid-ranked industries would see a larger increase of 1-1.5 points, with some potentially even higher increases.

Mr. Trieu also stated that the total number of applicants to the National Economics University to date is 27,000, which is 5.6 times higher than the target (4,800). Therefore, for every 5.6 applicants who wish to enroll in the National Economics University, only 1 will be admitted.

However, this year, candidates are allowed to register an unlimited number of preferences, so not all candidates registered for the National Economics University as their first choice. According to statistics, the total number of preferences registered for the university is 61,000, meaning that each candidate has at least 3 preferences for this university.

Dr. Pham Thu Huong, Head of Training DepartmentForeign Trade UniversityThe school stated that it hasn't officially released the admissions data yet; however, preliminary analysis shows that the number of applicants this year has doubled compared to last year. In addition, the scores in the admissions combinations are higher than in previous years, so the cutoff scores are expected to increase.

Preliminary statistics show that the number of applications from candidates wishing to apply to the Foreign Trade University has reached 14,000, while the university's quota this year is 3,750, including 2,850 at the Northern campus and 900 at the Southern campus.

According to Ms. Huong, the upward trend in admission scores will occur in all majors and training combinations of the school, not just in a few majors.

Last year, the lowest admission score for the Foreign Trade University's Hanoi campus was 23.45 (D02 combination) and the highest was 26.45 (A00 combination). At the Ho Chi Minh City campus, the lowest admission score was 24.5 (D01, A01 combinations) and the highest was 26.5 (A00 combination).

Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Van Top, Vice PrincipalHanoi University of Science and TechnologyAccording to data from April 25th (before candidates adjusted their nguyện vọng - preferences), the cut-off scores for the school this year are trending upwards.

There were some majors where the competition ratio for first-choice applications was quite high, so the cut-off scores for some very "hot" majors at Hanoi University of Technology such as information technology, mechatronics, automatic control, and telecommunications electronics would increase.

"These majors had admission scores of 24-27 points last year, so they will likely be higher this year. However, the highest-scoring majors won't see a significant increase because last year's score was approximately 9 points (27 points total for 3 subjects), so even if it increases this year, it will probably only reach 9.2-9.3 (27.4-27.6 points/3 subjects), not 10 (30 points)," Mr. Top analyzed. "Majors that had an admission score of 8 points (24 points) last year might see a slight increase."

That is why the University of Technology has set the minimum admission score for these majors at 24 points.

Mr. Top also predicted that, with such high admission scores, the number of applicants to these four majors decreased during the recent nguyện vọng adjustment period. However, the upward trend in cut-off scores for these majors remains unchanged.

In addition, majors at the "lower end," with lower cutoff scores, will see a greater increase. Majors like international programs will also see higher cutoff scores this year because even the minimum application score is higher.

Meanwhile, according to Mr. Tran Khac Thac, Deputy Head of the Training Department.Water Resources UniversityThe minimum admission score for some majors at the university this year will be 15.5 (the minimum score set by the Ministry of Education and Training).

Some majors, such as IT and Accounting, will have differences but will still adhere to the 2016 admission cutoff scores for the university. Last year, the cutoff score for these two majors was 6.72 (20.16/3 subjects).

Mr. Thac also stated that this year, because candidates can register for an unlimited number of preferences, there are more opportunities for admission. However, for mid-tier universities like the Water Resources University, it will be difficult to recruit exceptionally high-scoring candidates.

For example, the number of applicants for the IT major at the university is higher than the quota; however, applicants for this major usually also apply to the IT major at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, so it is difficult to determine how the cutoff score for this major will fluctuate.

University groups may announce their admission scores on July 31st.

According to Mr. Tran Van Top, Vice Rector of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the Northern group received data from the Ministry on the afternoon of July 26th. On the morning of July 27th, the universities will conduct a trial run of the data from the 56 member universities of the group to filter out fraudulent applications.

According to the plan, from July 28-30, the Ministry will run the virtual filtering software six times to help schools achieve their enrollment targets as accurately as possible. By the end of July 30, 56 schools in the group will finalize their provisional admission lists to submit to the Ministry before the final virtual filtering process.

From the morning of July 31st, schools can announce their admission scores and lists of admitted students.
