(Baonghean.vn) - The Russian news agency TASS quoted experts as saying that the summit between US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin did not achieve any breakthroughs as expected, and both leaders focused on the positive aspects.

Commenting on the June 16 meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden, Charles Kupchan, senior director for European affairs at the National Security Council (NSC) under the Barack Obama administration, told TASS that the Geneva summit could be seen as a "turning point" in Russia-US relations.
He pointed out: “The meeting seemed to go as expected. There were no breakthroughs. But both Putin and Biden focused more on the positive than the negative. Their exchange seemed constructive and forward-looking.”
"The meeting could be seen as a turning point in US-Russia relations, halting the downward spiral and potentially marking a starting point for improving relations," the expert added.
Kupchan is a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a professor of international affairs at Georgetown University. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a special assistant to the President of the United States and as a senior director for European affairs on the National Security Council under the Barack Obama administration.
According to this analyst, "the hard work is just beginning now."
He noted: "American and Russian diplomats and experts now need to roll up their sleeves and try to find common ground on cybersecurity, strategic stability, Syria, Ukraine, and other issues of mutual concern."
Kupchan emphasized: “As Biden himself has acknowledged, it will take months of dialogue before we can assess whether the June 16 meeting was a misstep or something that builds common ground and concrete cooperation and lasting improvement on the difficult agenda that the leaders have identified.”
