Tens of thousands of cherry blossom trees on Dien Bien Flower Island are entering their most beautiful blooming season, preparing for the spectacular festival taking place from January 9th to 11th, 2026.

In the early days of the new year, the small island in the middle of the Pá Khoang hydroelectric reservoir (Mường Phăng commune, Điện Biên province) comes alive with the vibrant pink of thousands of Japanese cherry blossom trees. Located about 20 km from the provincial center, this place is often affectionately called the "flower island" by tourists and locals alike.

The ideal time to enjoy the flower season.

According to photographer Trinh Xuan Tu in Dien Bien, this year's cherry blossom season arrived earlier than usual, beginning to bloom in late December 2025. Currently, the blossoms are densely and evenly distributed across the hillsides. Depending on the weather conditions each year, the flowering season can usually last for about two months, offering visitors the opportunity to admire this pristine beauty at the beginning of the year.

A unique cultural and historical space.

Located at an altitude of over 1,000 meters above sea level, the flower island boasts a cool climate, creating ideal conditions for the growth of approximately 20 different varieties of Japanese cherry blossoms. Here, there are ancient trees reaching 6-7 meters in height, bearing clusters of spectacular blossoms. Notably, each tree is fitted with a QR code for visitors to easily learn about its growth characteristics and variety.

From the flower garden, visitors can look directly towards Pu To Co mountain – where an observation post was once located during the historic Dien Bien Phu Campaign. The combination of picturesque natural scenery and glorious historical value creates a unique appeal for this land.

A 20-year journey of cultivating cherry blossoms.

The current beauty of the flower island is the result of the dedication of Dr. Tran Le, who has been researching and experimenting with planting this flower since 2005. Starting with 10 seeds gifted by the Japanese Ambassador, he successfully cultivated this flower species to suit the soil of Muong Phang. After 4 years, the first plants began to bloom, marking a turning point for local tourism.

From just 10 initial saplings, after 20 years, the number of trees here has increased to over 300,000, including both mature trees and seedlings from the nursery. Currently, the flower garden not only serves as a tourist attraction but also supplies seedlings to many organizations both domestically and internationally.
