"We consider the continued escalation of sanctions to be counterproductive and detrimental to the interests of both countries," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told AFP today.

The US Senate unanimously approved tougher sanctions against Russia in mid-June. However, the sanctions bill has yet to pass the House of Representatives and needs to be signed by President Donald Trump to take effect. The US House of Representatives is expected to vote on July 25.

According to Peskov, the Kremlin is still waiting to see whether President Trump will sign the measures into law.

Before President Trump makes a final decision, it is too early to say whether Moscow intends to retaliate, Peskov said.

Relations between Russia and the United States have fallen to their lowest point since the Cold War. The US has imposed sanctions on Russia, accusing it of interfering in the Ukraine crisis, but Moscow denies the allegations.
