Why does my car's air conditioner smell bad?
A foul odor from a car's air conditioner is mainly caused by the following reasons:
The evaporator coil and pipes are damp and moldy.
Mold is one of the common causes of unpleasant odors in car air conditioners. If the evaporator coil and piping system of your car's air conditioner emit an unpleasant or sour smell, it's highly likely that mold is present. The main reason for mold growth on the evaporator coil and piping is often due to turning off the engine and closing the doors before the air conditioner has had time to dry. Over time, mold will grow and cause unpleasant odors.
Dirty air filter
Car air conditioners operate on the principle of drawing in outside air. Therefore, before the air enters the system, the air filter removes dust and mold. Acting as a direct protective layer, the air conditioner filter often becomes dirty after a period of operation.
If the air filter is left dirty, the filtration efficiency will be low, the air quality will not be guaranteed, leading to unpleasant odors in the car's air conditioning system.
Dirty air conditioner fan
A dirty air conditioner fan can also cause a burning smell in the car's air conditioning system. If you notice the fan malfunctioning, especially if it's weaker than usual, it's very likely that the fan is dirty.

Another reason why car air conditioners smell bad is the presence of animal carcasses such as lizards or rats in the fan housing or engine compartment. How to eliminate bad odors in car air conditioners.

Use disinfectant spray.
If the odor is new, you can use disinfectant sprays to deodorize your car's air conditioning system. Note that disinfectant sprays usually contain chemicals. Therefore, after spraying, close the doors and windows and wait outside for about 20 minutes. Then, open all the doors and leave the car in the sun for 30 minutes to allow the odor to dissipate completely.
Air conditioner cleaning
Car owners can remove the air conditioning filter for cleaning. A vacuum cleaner or compressed air can be used to directly clean the filter's folds to remove all dust and dirt.
In addition to cleaning, car owners should also replace the air conditioning filter after every 15,000-20,000 km of driving, as recommended by the manufacturer.
Interior cleaning
