Digimon Story: Time Stranger officially launches on Nintendo Switch with a 4K graphics update.
After nine months of exclusivity on other platforms, Digimon Story: Time Stranger has officially launched on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. It comes with update 1.2.1, bringing 4K graphics, new support characters, and fixes for critical technical bugs.
Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer Media.Vision have officially expanded the reach of the JRPG game Digimon Story: Time Stranger. The game is now available on both the standard Nintendo Switch and the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2. This event marks the end of a nine-month exclusivity period, bringing the seventh installment of the main series to hybrid hardware platforms after its initial release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S last October.
Graphics upgrade on Nintendo Switch 2 and other high-end platforms.
The release on Nintendo systems coincided with a large-scale graphics update on the more powerful platforms. Patch version 1.2.1 added Graphics Mode functionality to the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions. Notably, this feature is also available on the Nintendo Switch 2, providing a superior visual experience compared to the original Switch.
Switch 2 users can now choose between two main settings:
- Quality Mode:Outputs images at resolutions up to 4K, supports HDR, and has a frame rate of 30 FPS.
- Performance Mode:Prioritize smooth playback with 1080p resolution and frame rates up to 60 FPS.
For the standard Nintendo Switch version, the game runs at fixed settings: 1080p when docked and 720p in handheld mode, both limited to 30 FPS and with no option to change graphics settings.

Graphics Specifications Comparison Table
| Foundation | Quality Mode | Performance Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 / PS5 / Xbox Series X | 4K, HDR, 30 FPS | 1080p, 60 FPS |
| Nintendo Switch (Standard) | 1080p (Docked) / 720p (Handheld), 30 FPS | Not supported |
Patch 1.2.1: Fixes process bugs and adds new features.
Along with its Switch launch, patch 1.2.1 has been rolled out globally to ensure consistency in features and source code across platforms. In addition to additions like Photo Mode for field exploration and the new Terriermon assistant character, this update focuses on addressing two critical technical bugs affecting the player experience.
First, there was a bug related to the Digifarm. Previously, training there would not be completed if the total playtime in the save file reached the maximum limit of 999 hours and 59 minutes, causing the countdown clock to stop. Second, there was a bug that prevented story progress in the main mission titled "The God of Speed's Wish" under certain conditions. Bandai Namco did not specify how many players were affected by these issues before the patch was released.
A transformation in content and combat system.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger marks a shift for the Digimon Story franchise towards a darker and more mature storytelling tone. The plot follows an ADAMAS agent who is thrust eight years into the past following a catastrophic event in Tokyo. In the digital world of Iliad, players must navigate factional conflicts stemming from the collapse of both worlds.
The turn-based combat system is built on a dynamic 3v3 battle grid. Players can bring a team of up to 6 Digimon, with 3 spare slots that can be flexibly replaced without losing a turn. The game boasts a roster of over 450 Digimon for players to scan, nurture, and deploy in battle.
Currently, the Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Digital Ultimate editions are available on the Nintendo eShop. For Switch users, three additional downloadable content (DLC) packages for the Season Pass are scheduled to be released on July 16th, July 23rd, and July 30th, 2026, respectively.
