People are rushing to buy wild geese worth millions of dong to eat and give as gifts during Tet.

Even before Christmas, the price of wild geese for the Lunar New Year season had risen to 1.2-1.5 million VND per kilogram, with some top-quality geese raised to order costing up to 10 million VND each. However, farm owners revealed that if orders aren't placed early, it will be difficult to buy them closer to Tet.

Mr. Giap, owner of the Viet Bird Garden farm in Dong My, Thanh Tri district (Hanoi), said that the price of commercially raised wild geese at his farm has now reached over one million dong per kilogram. Due to high demand and limited supply, it is very likely that even if the price of geese rises further closer to the Lunar New Year, the farm will no longer have any to sell.

When asked why this delicacy is so expensive, costing millions of dong per kilogram, Mr. Giap explained that wild geese are becoming increasingly rare. They have very low reproductive rates; a female goose only lays 4-7 eggs per year. The hatching success rate is also not as high as other breeds. In particular, the geese are raised on farms using clean farming practices, resulting in very delicious, flavorful, and protein-rich meat, making them highly sought after by customers.

According to Mr. Giap, customers like eating wild goose partly because these commercially raised geese usually weigh from 2 to over 4 kg, making them very suitable for families and organizations during year-end celebrations and gatherings.

Mr. Phuong, a poultry farmer specializing in Vinh Phuc province, said: "Currently, I mainly raise wild geese. This breed has firm meat, high nutritional content, and tastes delicious, so every year-end, customers flock to place orders, and I can't keep up with the demand."

Mr. Phuong added that he is currently raising over 30 wild geese, including 20 commercial geese, all of which have been ordered by regular customers at over 1.5 million VND per kilogram. He also has orders from several other regular customers, so he has to gather geese from other farms inside and outside the province, but even that isn't enough, despite the price of geese having doubled compared to normal days.

"Among the customers who buy geese from our farm, there is a well-known wealthy businessman from the province who ordered the finest geese, worth nearly 10 million VND each, and hired our family to raise them until the 20th of the 12th lunar month before taking them home to give as Tet gifts to his business partners," Mr. Phuong revealed.
