Rush to buy wild geese worth millions to eat and give as Tet gifts

Before Christmas, the price of wild geese for the Tet season had reached 1.2-1.5 million VND per kilogram, with the premium type raised to order costing 10 million VND per bird, but farm owners revealed that if they did not order early, it would be difficult to buy them near Tet.

Mr. Giap, owner of the Viet Bird Garden farm in Dong My, Thanh Tri district (Hanoi), said that the current price of commercial wild geese at the farm has reached over one million VND per kilogram. Due to the large number of orders and limited supply, it is very likely that by the Lunar New Year, even if the price of geese increases further, the farm will no longer have any to sell.

When asked why this specialty is so expensive, up to millions of dong per kilogram, Mr. Giap explained that wild geese are becoming increasingly rare. They have the characteristic of reproducing very little. Each year, a female goose only lays 4-7 eggs. The hatching success rate is not as high as other breeds. In particular, geese are raised on farms according to clean processes, so the meat is very delicious, fragrant, and rich in protein, so customers love it.

According to Mr. Giap, customers like to eat wild geese partly because this commercial goose species usually weighs from 2 to more than 4kg, making it suitable for families and agencies during parties and year-end summaries.

Mr. Phuong, a specialty poultry farm owner in Vinh Phuc, said: "Currently, I mainly raise wild geese. This is a species of goose with firm meat, high nutritional content, and delicious taste, so at the end of the year, customers flock to order, unable to keep up."

Mr. Phuong added that he is currently raising more than 30 wild geese, of which 20 commercial geese have been ordered by regular customers for over 1.5 million VND per kg. Currently, Mr. Phuong is also receiving orders from some regular customers, so he has to collect geese from other farms in and outside the province, but there are not many, even though the price of geese has doubled compared to normal days.

"Among the customers who buy geese from the farm, there is a famous tycoon in the province who ordered the best geese worth up to nearly 10 million VND each and hired the family to raise them until the 20th of December to bring them home to give as Tet gifts to business partners," Mr. Phuong revealed.
