According to the investigation, Sy lost a large amount of money in a bet but was unable to pay the debt. Because he was once sent by the telecommunications company where he worked to install computers at a karaoke bar in Hai Chau district, Sy had the cell phone number of the female owner of the bar.

On October 21, Sy bought many junk SIM cards and continuously texted the female karaoke bar owner's phone number, demanding one billion VND, otherwise he would beat the victim's child, blow up the bar, and go to her house to kill her.

The female owner negotiated to lower the amount to 500 million VND and Sy agreed. Sy also agreed to receive 20 million VND every 2 days until the amount of half a billion VND was reached. The victim then secretly reported to the police.

On the afternoon of October 26, at a coffee shop on Nguyen Du Street (Hai Chau District), Sy appeared to receive money and was arrested by the police./.
