Unique village well over 350 years old

(Baonghean.vn) - The village well is the soul of the homeland. The people of Dong Trung village, Dong Son commune (Do Luong) are always proud of their hometown Thang well which is over 350 years old.

The well was dug in the mid-17th century by the ancestor of the Tran Kim family - Tran Vinh (1620 - 1668), who opened the land to establish Dong Trung village. According to legend, Thang well is a place with good water source, it took 3 days and nights to complete.

The uniqueness of Thang well is that the well wall is made of 8 green stone slabs, using a yin-yang mortise and tenon system instead of mortar, forming a square, each side is 2m long and about 0.4m high, now more than 0.6m.

During the Nguyen Dynasty (mid-19th century), when the well was 200 years old, the daughter-in-law of the Nguyen Canh family, Mrs. Tu Luong, went with her husband to the North to hire stonemasons to bring back stones to form this well.

The well was built from the bottom up in a circular shape with square stones on the walls according to the concept of “round sky, square earth”. The strange thing is that the water level in the well is always higher than the nearby fields. In previous years, it often overflowed the well walls and flowed out. No matter how severe the drought, the water in Thang well has never dried up.

With its cool, sweet water, making tea, rice, and wine all delicious, Thang well has long been a precious water source for the village. Many generations of villagers have grown up and matured thanks to Thang well water.

In 2015, the people of Dong Son commune, including those who are far from home, fellow countrymen's associations, local businessmen... joined hands to raise more than 216 million VND to renovate Thang well. In this "large-scale" renovation, the well was paved with red bricks, surrounded by laterite, the well wall was raised, and a monument was erected...
