On April 20th, two days after the discovery of the suspect HVV residing in Hamlet 3, Thanh Ha Commune (Thanh Chuong District), who was cutting down trees...illegal deforestationAt plot 42, parcel 201, section 6, sub-area 1004E, map sheet number 2, Thanh Mai commune (Thanh Chuong district), the Thanh Chuong Forest Protection Department summoned the suspect HVV to take his statement.
In the first statement, HVV stated: On April 15, 2023, I went alone to the Ru Do area, Thanh Ha commune (Thanh Chuong district) to harvest timber. The timber harvesting took one day, during which I cut down 7 trees (Vang and Trau wood) using a chainsaw, then cut them into sections 2-3 meters long, totaling 13 sections. On April 18, 2023, while I was tying the timber together to be pulled back by buffaloes, I was discovered by an inspection team from the Thanh Chuong Forest Management Unit and the People's Committee of Thanh Ha commune.

HVV also testified that on April 5, 2023, he met a man named N. in Thanh Mai commune and asked if there was any wood around the area where they were building a road to transport acacia wood. N. replied that there was only small wood. Afterward, V. went to check it out to cut some pieces to use for building a straw storage shed.
On April 26, 2023, the Thanh Chuong Forest Management Unit and the Thanh Chuong District Police continued to summon HVV for questioning. This time, HVV clearly explained the details of borrowing a chainsaw from Mr. TVH, who lives in the same village, to go to the Ru Do area (bordering Thanh Ha and Thanh Mai communes) to harvest timber. The harvesting took place on April 13 (not April 15 as stated in the April 20 statement). Only his wife and Mr. TVH knew about HVV's timber harvesting. Initially, V. planned to go to the Giang Man peak area to harvest timber, but on the way to Ru Do, upon seeing timber on both sides of the road, he cut it down.

Notably, the suspect HVV only admitted to cutting down 7 trees and producing 13 logs, while at the scene of the deforestation, authorities discovered 30 logs of various types (mainly from groups VI to VIII). In addition, in the area surrounding lot 42, plot 201 mentioned above, 29 trees with diameters ranging from 28-36 cm were found cut at the base.
So who cut down the remaining trees if HVV only cut down 7 as he claimed? This matter is being further investigated by the relevant authorities in Thanh Chuong district.
