The Le Dynasty Canal, begun during the Early Le Dynasty, spans four provinces: Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, and Ha Tinh, spanning over 500 km. Of this, the section passing through Nghe An province is 128 km long, connecting Vinh city to Hoang Mai town. This canal section was one of the key targets of fierce attacks during the two national resistance wars.

In particular, during the years of the war against the US, the Nha Le Canal became one of the key waterways, a vital artery for transporting food and weapons to support the South in the fight against the US and for national liberation...
Thanks to the timely cooperation and contributions of the Transport sector, the entire Nha Le canal in Nghe An province in particular, and the Nha Le canal in the four provinces in general, have always been ensured to be open and unobstructed.

During the resistance war, for nearly 10 years, 1,350 cadres, workers, laborers, youth volunteers, and civilian workers participated in combat on the front lines of mine clearance, dredging waterways, and counter-blockades. In Nghe An province alone, 130 people bravely sacrificed their lives.
To commemorate and honor the brave soldiers of the waterway sector who heroically sacrificed their lives and the legendary canal that has gone down in history, in 1996, the Nghe An Department of Transport chose Than Vu Mountain, near the burial place of 130 martyrs in Nghi Yen commune, Nghi Loc district, as the site for the Le Dynasty Canal Memorial Monument. In 2015, the memorial monument was renovated and restored by the Nghe An Department of Transport to be worthy of its historical value and new landscape.
