“The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has been laid for 1,855 km along the Baltic Sea bed in the territorial waters of Russia, Finland, Sweden and Germany. This is 75% of the total length of the two pipelines. Therefore, Nord Stream 2 AG has started laying the remaining quarter of the pipeline,” the company said in a statement.
Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller also told the press: “Nord Stream 2 has entered the final stage.”
The project representative also noted that the construction of two gas pipelines has been fully completed in the territorial waters of Germany and Finland, and the installation process is continuing in the territorial waters of Russia. Onshore construction work in Germany and Russia is at the upgrade stage.
The Nord Stream 2 project involves building two pipelines with a total capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, running from the Russian coast through the Baltic Sea to Germany.
Construction costs are estimated at around 9.5 billion euros, and the pipeline is expected to be operational before the end of 2019.
Gazprom's European partners in the project include Germany's Uniper and Wintershall, Austria's OMV, France's Engie and Anglo-Dutch Shell. These partners finance 50% of the project.
